Evaluation of North Atlantic Model Mean

SSH and Current speed at 15m

Five-year mean climatology of Sea Surface Height (SSH in cm, left) and Current Speed at 15m (m/sec, right) from the NR and the FM are compared to each other and to mean fields of SSH and Current speed obtained from AVISO. Large-scale patterns of Gulf Stream and subtropical gyre in open Atlantic, Loop Current in the Gulf of Mexico, North Brazil Current along the northeastern coast of South America and continuation of northward current in the Caribbean are similar in both models and the observations. A cyclonic pattern in the SW Gulf of Mexico, known from in-situ observations, is well captured in both models and in AVISO. (Note: For a bigger view please click on the figure.)
